The Villa de Pitanxo was a Galician fishing vessel based in Marín that sank in the early hours of 15 February 2022 in the waters off Newfoundland, approximately 450 kilometres from the Canadian coast. Twenty-four crew members were on board, including Francisco Manuel Navarro, a biologist and resident of the Lomo Apolinario neighbourhood in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who worked as a fisheries observer for the Spanish Institute of Oceanography.

The vessel sank during a fishing operation in extremely adverse weather conditions. Only three sailors survived, while twenty-one lost their lives.

As a tribute to the victims, on 25 February 2024 the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria unveiled a commemorative monument in Plaza de Canarias. During the ceremony, Mayor Carolina Darias highlighted the importance of keeping alive the memory of those who lost their lives and stressed the need to clarify all the circumstances surrounding the shipwreck. Since then, this monument has served as a permanent place of remembrance for the victims of the Villa de Pitanxo, and especially for Francisco Manuel Navarro, a native of Gran Canaria.
