The Seagull Monument – Port of La Luz
The Seagull Monument, located on the southern roundabout of Avenida de los Consignatarios in the Port of La Luz, pays tribute to the fishing heritage and historical memory of the former Fishing Dock. The monument revives one of the port’s most iconic symbols, preserving the legacy of the famous weighing station known as “The Seagull”.
The original structure was designed in the 1960s by engineer José Luis Ramos Mesplé. Its distinctive concrete wings sheltered a weighbridge where catches unloaded from vessels of various nationalities were weighed. For more than sixty years, the site served as a landmark for dockworkers and fishermen, becoming a symbol of the intense fishing activity that characterized the port throughout much of the twentieth century.
Following the demolition of the original weighbridge during the redevelopment of the southern entrance to the port, the Port Authority promoted the creation of a new monument to preserve its legacy. Designed by Richard Gómez Melián and built by Hierros Bueno, the structure consists of two large steel semi-arches that evoke the flight of a seagull while reinterpreting the wings of the original building.
Standing approximately six metres high, the sculpture honours the generations of workers connected to the fishing industry and the international fleets that contributed to the development of the Port of La Luz. At the same time, it has become a new landmark for visitors and residents entering this area of the port, keeping alive an essential part of the maritime identity of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
