On July 25, 1980, Belén María Sánchez, a 16-year-old girl, lost her life during a demonstration organized by port workers at the Port of La Luz. he protest was part of a long labor dispute in which dockworkers and other port employees were demanding better working conditions and a fair collective labor agreement.

Belén was accompanying her father, a port worker and participant in the demonstrations, when she was struck by a vehicle near the port. Her death deeply shocked Canarian society and transformed her into a symbol of the labor movement and the defense of workers’ rights in the Canary Islands.

More than forty years later, her memory remains very present among port workers and trade union organizations. Commemorative events are held each year in her honor, and her story continues to represent the sacrifice and solidarity of those who took part in those labor struggles. The square that now bears her name serves as a permanent place of remembrance and a tribute both to her memory and to the efforts of the workers of the Port of La Luz to achieve fairer working conditions.
